Axxess founder John Olajide built his Dallas-based healthcare tech company from a fledgling startup in 2007 to a global company with 1,000 employees serving 3 million-plus patients. But the journey getting there wasn’t a straightforward path. 

He tells his own story to inspire others and strengthen the ecosystem. And he's confident that "we'll be celebrating several more unicorns going forward."

Perot Family’s $50M Gift Boosts UT Southwestern’s Medical Scientist Training Program

The Perot family’s support will expand the number of students admitted to UT Southwestern's dual-degree program as well as research disciplines in which they study, to include biomedical engineering, computational biology, bioinformatics, and data science. The funding will enhance the curriculum and experiences of Medical Scientist Training Program students and increase efforts to recruit students from elite U.S. colleges, including top international students who want to stay in the U.S. for their careers.

This Friday, November 11, Orlando and Medal of Honor Recipient CSM Gary Littrell (U.S. Army, retired) will serve as co-grand marshals of the Veterans Day Parade in Dallas, to be held starting at 11 a.m. at City Hall Plaza. It'll be a homecoming of sorts for Orlando. In 1973, his song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" became a global hit, reaching No. 1 in the U.S. and U.K. charts. Families of returning Vietnam War POWs adopted the song as their own, tying yellow ribbons on trees across America. Later in 1973, Orlando performed the song at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas at an event welcoming home returning POWs. with Bob Hope as host.

Trust for Public Land Receives Over $5.7M in New Commitments for Five Mile Creek Greenbelt

The Boone Family Foundation dedicated $2.65 million and Lyda Hill Philanthropies committed $2.5 million to help fund the Five Mile Creek Greenbelt, a network of parks and trails the TPL is developing across Oak Cliff and southwest Dallas. "For 80 years, Dallas has dreamed of a greenbelt along Five Mile Creek to benefit the city’s health, connectivity, and environment," the TPL's board chair said.

Dallas Is Pedaling Toward a New Citywide Bike Plan

The city of Dallas has a Bike Plan—but it was written in 2011. Now, after creating 67 miles of bike lanes across the city, Dallas is working on an updated bicycle master plan that lays out future bike and roadway improvement needs. “We want to build connected bicycle routes that help you safely get from your home to your work, school, parks, and other destinations,” the city said in a statement.

McKinney's Wistron GreenTech has partnered with New Jersey-based Princeton NuEnergy on a lithium-Ion battery direct recycling pilot production line, which officially opened in McKinney today. PNE founder Dr. Yan Chao calls it a "powerful next step" in a vision for covering a nationwide close-loop recycling supply chain for the batteries.

The line will use PNE's patented process to recycle everything from phone batteries to full EV battery packs.

Southern Gateway Park, a planned $172 million, five-acre deck park over I-35 by the Dallas Zoo—just reached a big milestone. TxDOT has completed the foundation deck for Phase 1 of the deck park (seen in the right half of the image above). The park will literally and figuratively reconnect the Oak Cliff neighborhood that was divided by I-35 in the 1950s. The park promises to be an engineering marvel with five acres of wooded slopes, water features, rocky escarpments, a restaurant/retail complex hidden under a hilltop, and one of the most awesome kids' playgrounds in North Texas. But its greatest achievement may be to make Oak Cliff whole again—and to bring all of Dallas together.
