The Last Word: Leaf President on What Made DFW the ‘Trading Card Capital of the World’

“For the longest time it was simply about collecting. And that turned into investing when people realized they could make money.”

Josh Pankow
President
Leaf Trading Cards
.…on why trading cards have taken off—and what made DFW “the trading card capital of the world,” via the Dallas Morning News.

If you listen to sports talk radio on stations like Dallas’ 105.3 The Fan, you know that along with sports talk, there’s “card talk” too. Hosts like former Texas Rangers pitcher Mike Bacsik share their obsessions about trading cards’ timelessly powerful appeal—and, hopefully, ever-growing value.

But you may not know that Dallas-Fort Worth has become “the trading card capital of the world,” with two big industry players, Leaf and Panini America, headquartered in the region, and top local auction houses routinely hammering sales of rare, headline-grabbing cards.

“We’re catering more towards people that actually buy for the sake of collecting, and aren’t just looking to hit the lottery,”  Pankow told the Dallas Morning News’ Andrew Long. “We’re not catering quite as much to the gambling side.”

But that doesn’t keep collectors from chasing million-dollar dreams. Find out all about it in the DMN story here.
