A newly established federal agency—Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), a $2.5 billion initiative modeled after the successful DARPA—aims to revolutionize medical research. To secure one of its three national centers, three Texas cities have formed a consortium that's set to propel the Lone Star State to the forefront of effort. If their pursuit is successful, the hub would land in Dallas—and have spokes across the Lone Star State.
The initial investment will support the commercialization of life science research, including identifying researchers with entrepreneurial mindsets, safeguarding intellectual property, and recruiting key executives.
The new tenants include Engage Dallas, Housing Forward, PCCI, Teach for America, Texas Women’s Foundation, and The 2.0 Collaborative. The additions bring Water Cooler at Pegasus Park to a full capacity with a total of 32 tenants, ranking it among the largest nonprofit shared space communities in the country.
The campaign builds on the region's thriving tech sector as the foundation of Dallas-Fort Worth's growing biotech and life science ecosystem. “What we’re seeing now is the cumulative effect of convergence across industries—and that gives DFW an edge," says Mike Rosa, the DRC's economic development chief.
The DRC's new VP of Economic Development, Kelly Cloud, is spearheading efforts to attract startups and established life science companies to Dallas-Fort Worth.

In a ceremony Thursday night in New York City, Hill received a 2022 Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy along with fellow recipients Dolly Parton, Manu Chandaria, and Lynn and Stacy Schusterman.
Dallas Innovates wrote about Hill's honor back in August. She was recognized by the Carnegie Medal for supporting women in STEM fields and inspiring girls to be interested in STEM careers, in addition to being recognized for investments in the life sciences, including cancer and mental health research and treatment; conservation; and empowering community-based nonprofits to maximize impact, the organization said.
Agarwal is CEO of Dallas-based Nextt, America’s largest bedding company. Known as the “King of Textiles,” he’s also the CEO of S2 Resources and Saffaire Investments, and earlier this year he launched a B2B marketplace, Expo Bazaar USA.
But the busy businessman also stays busy in the volunteer world. Since 2020, he's been on the Dallas Park Board as Mayor Eric Johnson’s rep, and has been the board's president since September 2021.
Dallas' Lyda Hill has been named one of five recipients of the 2022 Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy. She shares the philanthropic spotlight with four other "forces for positive change," including country music legend Dolly Parton.
An early donor of the research that led to the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, Hill believes that "science is the answer"—and has chosen to donate the entirety of her estate to philanthropy and scientific research.
The multi-floor space for nonprofits, philanthropies, and social impact organizations now has 26 tenants with around 500 employees. The six new ones range from the Nature Conservancy of Texas to the Lone Star Justice Alliance to SWAN Impact Network and more.
“This dream of ours just keeps getting bigger and better,” says Lyda Hill, founder of Lyda Hill Philanthropies.
On NBC’s TODAY on Friday, the IF/THEN Initiative unveiled a new ad campaign in collaboration with the social impact nonprofit Ad Council that’s set to air on Super Bowl Sunday.
The Dallas-based nonprofit is also taking its 3D-printed statues to the Smithsonian Museum.
Catchafire puts volunteer talent into the social impact sector to help social good organizations get the professional help they need, when they need it.
Thanks to the North Texas partnership, the volunteer skills matchmaker has brought virtual support to more than 300 nonprofit organizations in North Texas, so far.
The institute received the prize for its "Lone Star Depression Challenge," an effort to increase mental health awareness and decrease skyrocketing depression rates in Texas.
Following a temporary tour brought on by a COVID delay, the most statues of women ever assembled in one location at one time has finally been unveiled at NorthPark Center. It's a culmination of Lyda Hill Philanthropies' work with the IF/THEN Initiative to create a cultural shift in how the world perceives women in STEM.
"The downside of a pandemic is that it's frightening. The good thing is, sometimes it speeds up things that probably needed to happen. Like telemedicine," Nicole Small, CEO of LH Capital/Lyda Hill Philanthropies, said during the event.
Health Wildcatters CEO Hubert Zajicek, Perot Jain Principal Cindy Revol, Lyda Hill Philanthropies CEO Nicole Small, and others will be on a panel about how the health care and tech industries have been innovative during COVID-19 as part of the new Children’s Health program launch on Oct. 8.
COVID-19 delayed the opening of a 3D-printed display from Lyda Hill Philanthropies IF/THEN Initiative of the most statues of women ever assembled. Starting Sept. 10, the exhibit is instead doing a pop-up near Macy’s Court.
