“Big Tex boots on the highway!”
.…from a viral video posted by user 23CUPS, who spotted Big Tex’ boots being trucked to Fair Park.
It’s going to be 106 degrees all weekend in Dallas-Fort Worth, but don’t worry—fall is coming! The proof’s in a viral video posted by user 23CUPS on Facebook and Instagram. There, in the next lane on the highway, an 18-wheeler is trucking gigantic Big Tex boots toward Fair Park, where the State Fair of Texas will open on September 29.
If there was any doubt—hey, maybe someone else wears Size 12,000 footwear—the boots’ look matches the winning entry from the 2023 Big Tex Boot Design Contest (above), which was announced March 1. Designed by Irving’s Jessica Bonilla, a 23-year-old social worker, the winning look features a horned frog and cactus framed against a West Texas sunset.
“While I work in the mental health field and substance misuse field, I also run a small business selling my art,” Bonilla said in a statement last March. “I heard about the Big Tex Boot Design Contest, and I really wanted to challenge myself to draw in a new style that I’m not as familiar with. I’m beyond excited that my design was selected to be featured on Big Tex and I will have the opportunity to share my art with millions of people!”
The State Fair of Texas received more than 300 entries from artists ranging in age from 10 to 79 before choosing Bonilla’s.
As the first-place winner, Bonilla received the opportunity to work with the State Fair of Texas and Lucchese Bootmaker to put the finishing touches on her design.
“Jessica’s design highlights the beautiful and vibrant Texas sunsets we all know and love, and we can’t wait to see her vision brought to life by our bootmakers,” Doug Kindy, Lucchese President, said at the time.
You won’t have to wait long, since the fair will open in a little more than a month—hopefully bringing cooler temps with it as well.
