AIA Dallas’ Unbuilt Design Award Winners: Eric Gonzales Takes on the Sublime Landscape of Iceland

Gonzales' proposal for a new guest house within an Iceland resort plays with a dual notion of interaction and relationships. With this, he creates "a kind of playful tension" on the site.

At the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects’ 2020 Unbuilt Design Awards, unbuilt projects by Dallas architects were put on display. Three designs won awards—read about the other two winners here and here—out of 42 entries from 30 local firms.

The judges agreed that the clarity of the concept of nine-grid ‘twins’ clear and compelling. Jen Maigret, AIA, founding principle at PLY+ and one of the judges, said the team applauded that the “diagram gained richness through its sensitive site response and spatial balance between individual and collective experiences amidst a stunning landscape.”
