The Last Word: The Loop Dallas on Nic Nicosia’s ‘The Twins’ on the Katy Trail

“Encountering the figures on the Katy Trail makes them seem like alien avatars in an alternate reality.”

Watch out for something curious the next time you walk, run, or bike down Dallas’ Katy Trail at the Thomson Overlook. There you’ll find the two “alien avatars” created by artist Nic Nicosia after a commission by The Austin Contemporary.

The Spring 2023 Katy Trail Art installation, presented in partnership with Nasher Public, is on view through November 20.

While the twins look alike, they have subtle differences—but each points at the other with a left forefinger in a gesture open to endless interpretations. The Loop Dallas believes it suggests “opposite directions in a choose-your-own-adventure game.”

Nicosia is posing between the twins in the photo above, to be replaced—endlessly, repeatedly, and without the shadow of a doubt—by countless social media posers over the next three and a half months.

The installation is one of Nicosia’s first forays into foundries and larger cast sculptures, The Loop’s LinkedIn post notes, offering a public encounter that’s “simultaneously familiar and surreal, whimsical and unsettling.”
