Plano-Based Pizza Hut To Offer Free ‘Goodbye Pies’ Through Valentine’s Day

In a heartbreakingly clever marketing stunt, Pizza Hut is offering free Hot Honey "Goodbye Pies" between now and Valentine's Day, while supplies last. Your soul may be shattered, but hey—at least you get some slices.

Breaking up is hard to do. It’s even harder to do on Valentine’s Day—which is why many ditchers do the ditching a week or so beforehand. Now a Plano-based pizza restaurant chain is helping them out by offering “Goodbye Pies” to get the message across with a sweet-hot consolation prize.

Starting today through Valentine’s Day, Pizza Hut is launching the new, limited-edition Hot Honey Goodbye Pies “to help deliver spicy news in a sweet way for free.” That time window includes Red Tuesday—the Tuesday before Valentine’s, which is supposedly when more people get dumped than on any other day of the year.

The Yum! Brands subsidiary says that by sending a Goodbye Pie, Pizza Hut will help customers break up with their significant other by delivering “a personalized, simple message on custom packaging.” The custom Goodbye Pie pizza boxes feature a space on the top for the break-upper’s name to be heartbreakingly added.

Available in North Texas as a breakup text-based link

The Goodbye Pies will be available at select locations while supplies last “in the three major U.S. cities notorious for heartbreaks”: New York, Chicago, and Miami.

But for breakup artists in North Texas and elsewhere, you can go to this website to request Pizza Hut to write a breakup text for you to send, along with a link to a gift card for your soon-to-be-ex to redeem a free Hot Honey pizza. “Limited quantities only available during this limited time,” the company says.

“The rising popularity of the sweet-heat flavor profile has led to Hot Honey becoming the most requested test item by our team members and we’re thrilled to have it as the newest addition to our menu,” Pizza Hut CMO Lindsay Morgan said in a statement. “With the launch of Goodbye Pies, we’re bringing that perfect blend of sweet and heat experience to real life, delivering spicy news in the sweetest way for Valentine’s Day.”

We checked the website out ourselves at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and the Goodbye Pies were sold out for the day. But the site still offered a “breakup excuse generator” with handy lines for why you need to break up, including “I just don’t see a future with someone who uses 3-in-1 shampoo” and “We want different things. For example, I want someone else, and you want me.”
