Bedford-based Nanoscope Instruments Inc. received a patent for a system that measures how much usable vision a patient has left by tracking how they move through a space and handle objects.
Nanoscope Instruments makes biomedical imaging products for ocular research and is part of the Nanoscope family of companies, which includes the late-stage clinical biotechnology company Nanoscope Therapeutics.
The new patent, No. 12702291-B2, lists four inventors: Michael Carlson of Rowlett, Samarendra Kumar Mohanty of Southlake, Sanghoon Kim of Bedford and Subrata Batabyal of Arlington. Mohanty is the company’s CEO.
How the test works
The patent covers vision quantification systems and methods for evaluating functional vision using mobility and dexterity assessments. Rather than relying on a single measurement, such as visual acuity, the described systems track what a person can actually do. The filing states the systems are designed for patients with low vision.
The application was filed Dec. 8, 2023, and issued 977 days later.

Solo Brands LLC (Grapevine) won Patent No. 12704308-B2 for a portable air conditioner built into a cooler. A control panel switches the unit between blowing ambient air and pushing air across a heat exchanger fed by liquid pumped from the cooler. The company also makes the Solo Stove.
SRFC Bio Inc. (Dallas) received Patent No. 12703802-B2 covering water-based antimicrobial coating compositions and the residual coatings they form. Four of the five inventors are in North Texas. The company, formerly Allied BioScience, sells continuously active surface sanitizers.
Harrison Jet Guns II L.P. (Kennedale) won Patent No. 12704049-B2 for a detonator arming assembly built into the bulkhead of an oilfield perforating gun. All four inventors are in Kennedale.
