Irving-based artificial intelligence software developer Deep Cognition Inc. has made the short list of finalists for Best Innovation in Deep Learning in the AIconics awards that will be presented Wednesday at the AI Summit in San Francisco.
Alconics is the only independently-judged awards celebrating artificial intelligence for business. It honors “the drive, innovation, and hard work in the international Artificial Intelligence for Business Community,” according to the Alconics website.
Mahesh Kashyap, chief development officer at Deep Cognition, said the awards program drew more than 300 entries in the 10 award categories from across the globe this year. That’s three times the number of entries in 2016.
“The idea of building AI strategy, applications, and AI models are challenging for any company.”

Others on the short list for the innovation in deep learning category are UseAIble, DeepMotion, Kindred, and EruditeAI.
“We had lot of competition this year,” Kashyap said of the overall Alconics awards list.
He said the awards competition is significant for Deep Cognition because it is an opportunity to highlight the company’s platform on national and international levels.
Deep Cognition’s main product is Deep Learning Studio, which was released in January and is intended to make AI-based applications accessible to everyone by allowing companies to design AI through visual programming, Kashyap wrote on his LinkedIn blog.
“The idea of building AI strategy, applications, and AI models are challenging for any company,” Kashyap told Dallas Innovates.
That’s especially true, he said, when there is a big hurdle of actually learning such deep learning platforms as TensorFlow from Google or MXNet from Amazon, as well as learning programming languages such as Python.
“Our simple drag-and-drop interface solves these problems and even smaller companies and research labs can think about implementing AI strategies within their organizations and labs,” Kashyap said.
Deep learning is an artificial intelligence function that mimics the human brain in processing data and creating patterns for use in decision making, according to Investopedia. It is a subset of machine learning in AI whose networks are capable of learning unsupervised from data that is unlabeled and unstructured.
Other Alconics award categories are Best AI Startup, Best Innovation in RPA, Best Intelligent Assistant Innovation, Best Innovation in NLP, Best Application of AI in Enterprise, Best AI Application in Health Care, Best Innovation in AI Hardware, Best Application for Sales and Marketing, and Best Application of AI for Financial Services,
