The Centanni Lab at TCU has received a $10,000 grant from the GRAMMY Museum for a study exploring connections between musical instruction and brain improvements that might help with dyslexia. "We've found in the last few years that there may be some overlap here—a really interesting way of using our knowledge about musical training to learn some more about what's happening in the brain in individuals that have dyslexia," Dr. Tracy Centanni told Dallas Innovates.

The Yomi robotic system, developed by Miami-based Neocis, is assisting with dental implants in at least two Dallas-area practices. "It works like a GPS navigation system for the mouth,” says Coppell's Dr. J. Robert Steele. At ArchPoint in Dallas, 172 implants in 90 cases have been placed using Yomi, with patients being "intrigued" by the "minimally invasive experience." Cool fact to watch for below: Yomi's co-developer won an Emmy for creating ESPN's "K-Zone" pitch tracker.

Southwest Airlines Invests in Startup That’s Turning Corn Waste into Jet Fuel

As part of a Department of Energy-backed effort, Dallas-based Southwest Airlines is investing in SAFFiRE Renewables, a new startup that aims to turn corn waste into sustainable aviation fuel. Once the product is fully tested, SAFFiRE says about 7.5 billion gallons of sustainable aviation fuel could be produced by 2040. Southwest CEO Bob Jordan calls the technology "game-changing."

When that happens, a long list of alerts from car honks to flashing lights to texts and smart home device messages could lead to the biggest impact of all: saving a child's life.
