Dallas Startup Week 2018: Day 1 Roundup

The free, five-day celebration of all things startup is officially underway.

Dallas Startup Week

Dallas Startup Week is officially underway, and we’ve got your recap of Monday’s happenings so far.

The free, five day celebration of all things startup is bringing area entrepreneurs and local leaders together for educational workshops and discussions around building the community. This year, you’ll find events throughout the Dallas area and into the suburbs.

The event kicked off this morning with a discussion featuring entrepreneurs Dave Copps of Brainspace, Ben Lamm of Conversable and newly launched Hypergiant, and Jasmin Brand of Launch DFW

Then, Corey Egan, founder and CEO of smart lighting startup Ilumi Solutions Inc, offered up insight about the growing Internet of Things industry. He said the world could have more than 50 billion connected devices by 2020. Our reporter Nicholas Sakelaris has takeaways from that session here

Michelle Bogan, managaing director of retail strategy for Kurt Salmon, a part of Accenture Strategy told the audience during the session The Business Case for Mentoring Women that the firm works to help give women skills they will need to be successful at work, and to work with men in companies to help them advocate for women and be good allies.

“There are so many sorts of biases and small unconscious assumptions that go into play during discussions and decision making in the workplace,” she said. “There is a huge disparity between the percent of women that are entering the workforce today and the percent of women that are then promoted into leadership positions.”

During the session, The Artist Enterpreneur: How to Master Your Craft and Think Like an Entrepreneur, James Hart, a serial entrepreneur and director of arts enterpreneurship at Southern Methodist University, talked about what an entrepreneur needs to succeed.

“Stories, your network, skills, talents, and your willingness to ask for help are the greatest assets you have as a creative and an entrepreneur,” he said.

Hart created the first professional conservatory dedicated to creative and arts entrepreneurship.

There are still a few more sessions to catch today including a look at how retailers such as GameStop, Michael’s, and Pottery Barn are staying relevant in the world of Amazon and discovering unique solutions for the chronic diseases and conditions that have the highest impact on North Texas.

Then, you can let loose at the official Dallas Startup Week launch party tonight 7-10 p.m. at the historic Longhorn Ballroom. Take a spin on the dance floor, snap pics at the photo booth, or chat with local founders, creators, and other business mavens. The event is free and will feature food trucks, drinks, and live music. A great way to wind down after a day full of thought-provoking discussions.

Don’t stay out too late though. Startup Week returns Tuesday with a full slate of offerings. The morning sessions will cover everything from social innovation and diverse practices in leadership to tips for startup growth paths and public-private partnerships in the smart cities realm.
