UT System Named to World’s ‘Most Innovative’ List

The annual Reuters ranking recognizes the world's top 100 universities which are "doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies, and power new markets and industries."

The University of Texas System ranked No. 9 on Reuters‘ list of the “World’s Most Innovative Universities.”

The UT System was the highest-ranking educational institution on the list in Texas. Locally, that educational framework includes the University of Texas at Arlington and University of Texas at Dallas.

The annual ranking by the news agency recognizes the world’s top 100 universities which, according to Reuters, are “doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies, and power new markets and industries.”

Reuters noted the UT System is the recipient of nearly 70 percent of research funds for public institutions in the state each year.

Reuters noted the UT System is the recipient of nearly 70 percent of research funds for public institutions in the state each year. In the last five years, its researches have produced more than 120,000 publications.

Both UTD and UTA are engaging in a variety of research projects and have spun off numerous startups working to disrupt a range of industries.

At UTA, researchers are working on how to convert natural gas to high-grade diesel and jet fuel at the newly opened Conrad Greer Lab. Others, are helping us better understand the universe in a project studying the properties of neutrinos. Earlier this year, a team of UTA grads received a patent on a smart bandage.

Meanwhile, researchers at UTD are developing a wearable device that can monitor an individual’s glucose level via perspiration on the skin. They’ve also discovered a way for carbon nanotube yarns to produce an electric charge and are looking at alternatives to silicon transistors, which power many of our electronic devices.

Other Texas schools to make this year’s “Most Innovative” list include Baylor College of Medicine and Rice University in Houston. California’s Stanford University claimed the top spot for the third consecutive year.
