Toyota, TCC Team Up to Train Auto Technicians

Students will attend classes and serve as interns at Toyota or Lexus dealerships during the school week.

As Toyota Motor North America readies to welcome employees into its Plano headquarters, the automaker is joining forces with Tarrant County College to turn out skilled technicians.

Officials with Toyota North America and Gulf States Toyota, along with TCC leaders announced the collaboration this week that will result in more technicians finding high-paying jobs at auto dealers, according to a report in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The announcement was made in the automotive lab at the TCC South Campus in Fort Worth that was filled with 37 new cars donated by the automaker for TCC students to work on, the newspaper said.

“The training the students receive here will be seamless to what they’ll experience in the workplace.”
TCC Chancellor Eugene Giovannini

“The training the students receive here will be seamless to what they’ll experience in the workplace,” TCC Chancellor Eugene Giovannini said. “The cars you see here, the tools, the curriculum will be such that when they go to the workplace, there won’t be anything new, anything different.”

According to the Star-Telegram, the two-year program will begin in fall 2018 with 20 students the first year, and 20 more in the second year.

The students will have a mix of classroom and onsite experience — attending classes three days a week and working as interns at area Lexus or Toyota dealerships the rest of the school week.

Upon graduation, the technicians could get jobs starting at $32,000 to $42,000 a year, the Star-Telegram reported. Salaries can rise to $85,000 or more for senior technicians.
