In the “tech keeps getting smaller department,” enter the new DLPC8445 display controller from Dallas-based Texas Instruments. It’s part of the TI chipset combo that drives high-definition DLP projectors, and it’s 90% smaller than the previous generation. That gives designers the ability to replicate the “wow factor” of high-end TV displays and gaming monitors in a compact projector, TI says.
The rendering above shows just such a tiny projector in somebody’s living room. But even though it looks really small, the DLPC8445 is something much smaller inside of it.
How small? The DLPC8445 is only 9mm by 9mm, about as wide as a pencil eraser. Though it’s the smallest of its kind, TI says it can enable a diagonal display of 100 inches or more “in vivid image quality with ultra-low latency.”
Designed for future, more compact video and gaming projectors—and augmented reality glasses—the new controller will enable “the smallest, fastest, and lowest-power 4K ultra-high-definition projectors ever,” TI says.
Delivering ‘submillisecond’ display latency—and bringing big-screen experiences ‘anywhere’
When this new controller is combined with TI’s digital micromirror device, the DLP472TP, designers can deliver displays that achieve “submillisecond display latency, matching or exceeding the world’s most high-end gaming monitors and reducing lag time for gamers,” with frame rates up to 240Hz.
Jeff Marsh, VP and general manager of DLP products at TI, says that immersive display entertainment “is now sought out by everyday consumers, not just movie enthusiasts and gamers.”
“Where consumers once needed a big TV or monitor for a crisp and clear display, they can now use a lifestyle or gaming projector and transform a wall into the screen size of their choosing with 4K UHD quality,” he added in a statement. “Our new controller is the latest example of how TI DLP technology is helping engineers develop epic displays for entertainment that can be taken anywhere.”
