The Last Word: ORCA AG’s Charmaine Tang on Her Wall Street Beginnings

“I met Steve Jobs and fetched him blanched and raw almonds in 1996, when no one knew what a raw almond was.”

.…on her “Journey From Wall Street Wonder to Tech Titan,” via D CEO.

Last October, Tang—a Dallas-based finance executive with over 25 years of experience serving clients at top global financial firms—was named president of ORCA AG, a software and services company based in Zurich, Switzerland, that works with family offices, private equity firms, venture capitalists, foundations, corporations, professional services firms, and other complex clients.

Tang is the “first ‘boots on the ground’ in America,” introducing the company’s intelligent administration tool to wealth and asset managers.

Her long road from her early days on Wall Street to her key leadership role at ORCA AG includes more than that Steve Jobs tidbit, according to D CEO’s Kelsey Vanderschoot. The daughter of Filipino immigrants took a winding path to reach her current executive office, from a coveted spot at New York City’s public Stuyvesant High School to a $5-an-hour job at JPMorgan Chase tugging bond trades out of pneumatic tubes to a finance and accounting degree at New York University.

Not having an Ivy League background might have posed an obstacle for some aspiring to reach the upper ranks in finance. But Tang’s drive and focus swiftly earned her an investment banking position at Morgan Stanley, writes Vanderschoot.

“I would challenge myself intellectually at every stage; it was almost like I was training—just getting stronger,” Tang told D CEO.
