Data is—and will continue to be—”fundamentally important to our society,” according to a new report from Dallas-based JLL.

The volume of that data our society creates is increasing at a rapid rate—and it’s foundational to how we work, live, and play. ChatGPT alone uses about as much power as 33,000 households, with its hundreds of millions of daily queries, the firm notes.

That’s led to sharply increasing demand for data centers in a time of tightening supply, forcing a shift toward secondary and new, emerging markets.

JLL’s H2 2023 North American Data Center Report shows that data center demand shows no sign of slowing, and that power availability and delivery timelines continue to damper absorption. “Demand continues to be at all-time highs, and data center growth is rapidly expanding from core markets in search of power,” Andy Cvengros, managing director, data center markets, JLL, said in a statement.
