“Digital marketing tactics won’t save your startup.” That’s a key message James Loomstein shares on LinkedIn from his decade of teaching Social Media for Entrepreneurship at SMU Cox School of Business. “Sustainable company growth comes from understanding the business problem, not mastering a social media tactic,” he writes.

The managing partner at Dallas-based Rogue Marketing, who is an adjunct professor at the university, says his teaching philosophy centers on a core belief: “frameworks beat formulas.” Rather than focusing on growth hacks and quick fixes, he guides students toward deeper insights about creating business success.

“Every semester, I watch students arrive expecting to learn about posting strategies and content calendars,” Loomstein writes. “Instead, they discover something far more valuable—how to become the CEO of the problem.”

In the post, he shares tips to what really works—from understanding market size realities to why throwing money at software isn’t the answer. Removing friction points often matters more than increasing marketing spend, for example. (Read his eight key insights here.)

True business sustainability comes from deeper insights, Loomstein believes. “Because, in the end, success isn’t about having the biggest marketing budget — it’s about truly understanding the problems you’re solving and having the tools to address them effectively.”
