Beyond Gaming: How Minecraft Became a Platform for Scientific Learning and AI Research

UT Dallas researcher Dr. Walter Voit transformed Minecraft’s 170-million-player universe into an advanced virtual training ground—for students and for AI agents tested by DARPA. His team’s Polycraft World uses gameplay to turn classroom theory into real-world expertise, covering topics from synthetic organic chemistry to nuclear plants to semiconductor facilities.
Their new startup company, Pedegree Studios, has licensed the core technologies from the university to create a scalable digital pipeline for education and workforce development.

Adaptive3D is moving its headquarters from Plano to Richardson's newly christened IQ HQ, returning to the city where it was founded. The company is working on photopolymers that separate into two parts at the “nano level,” making them more durable for industries ranging from consumer and healthcare to industrial and transportation.
“This move also signals the strength and importance of partnerships with key academic institutions like UT Dallas and the role they play in fostering the collaborative creation of future-ready technologies within the IQ,” says Founder and CEO Walter Voit.

UT Dallas-based Qualia Oto is developing the next generation of cochlear implants, and has announced closing a Series A preferred round of around $1.64 million.
Unlike typical cochlear implants that use bundles of wires attached to a receiver to stimulate the auditory nerve, Qualia Oto’s implant uses thin-film electrode arrays embedded in a polymer, allowing for more contact with the inner ear. That translates to a higher quality and range of sounds that are able to be transmitted.

Adaptive3D Closes on a Series B Investment to Scale Up On Materials for 21st Century Manufacturing

Dallas-based Adaptive3D, a startup spun out of UT Dallas, wants to change how the world mass manufacturers plastics and rubbers. The company, which has a team of inventors and a large IP portfolio, plans to use the funds to scale production and distribution to deliver photoresin parts at a fraction of the weight and cost.
