The academic medical center formerly known as UNTHSC is embracing a new identity that ties it more closely to the University of North Texas System—and to the community it serves. With nearly $100M in funded research and a tech-forward focus, UNT Health Fort Worth will continue to champion innovation in healthcare.
Taking the stage at Tannahills Tavern and Music Hall in Fort Worth were startups from as close as Southlake and Dallas and as far away as London and Nigeria. Their shared vision, Managing Director Trey Bowles said, was to "improve health outcomes and support a market opportunity that's global in scale."
Last month, we told you about MedCognetics getting FDA clearance for its unbiased AI-enabled software for breast cancer screening. Today, the Dallas-based company announced it has been awarded $750,000 from an NIH program to research unbiased AI for breast cancer detection.
The NIH's AIM-AHEAD program—short for Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Consortium to Advance Health Equity and Researcher Diversity—awarded the grant. "This NIH grant will play an important role in future product development as well as helping us further expand our global market penetration," said MedCognetics CEO Debasish Nag.
Singer with sore throat? Dancer with damaged knee? Actor with active infection? You're all in luck—the UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth is offering free health care for performing artists through late April.
Funded by an anonymous donor, the free clinic is being provided by UNT HSC's Performing Arts Medicine Clinic, whose on-site physicians treat dancers, actors, vocalists, and instrumentalists of all ages and skill levels.
Remote Area Medical will hold a free, two-day clinic December 3-4 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, 650 S. Griffin Street in downtown Dallas. The clinic is being presented in collaboration with the UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth. Free free dental, vision, and medical care will be offered to those in need.
Held mostly in Fort Worth but also in cities across DFW, GEW North Texas will feature everything from a kickoff party to an "urban farm crawl" to fireside chats, pitch competitions, revealing sessions, and a wrap party. Along the way, you can learn how to access capital; how to go global; how to master cybersecurity; how to leverage free e-commerce tools; how to start up from scratch with a branded website; and much more.
It's just part of what's happening simultaneously worldwide during Global Entrepreneurship Week, with 40,000 activities planned in nearly 200 countries.
Schneider Electric—a France-based global leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation—brands itself with the message "Life Is On." Now it's tasking Dickinson with responsibility for all its financial operations in the $8 billion North American region—from driving microgrid innovations to helping Schneider achieve a "real energy transition."
"The company is doubling down on its commitment to building a more sustainable and electrified future," Dickinson told Dallas Innovates.
"You're putting more bets on the table that it will lead to some sort of future economic growth that you probably can't predict," Cushman told Dallas Innovates. "Some of these companies, they may pack up move away. We'll never see him again. So you know, good try. Other may open an office here or use Fort Worth as their U.S. jumping-off point for their foreign companies. Others may pack up the entire company and move here."
At the 2022 BIO International Conference in San Diego, representatives from North Texas met "the greatest minds in biotechnology"—and discovered some of them are interested in relocating their companies to DFW.
"We connected with them to explore opportunities and increase investments in the Dallas region,” said a VP with the Dallas Regional Chamber.
A ribbon-cutting was held Thursday for UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth's $6.75 million Regional Simulation Center.
The new center features “immersive simulation spaces” powered by 360-degree virtual-reality projections; 14 realistic-looking examination rooms; VR headset learning experiences; an adaptable procedural skills suite; a daily-living activities suite designed to look like a home’s interior; and assorted team and learning rooms.
OncoNano Medicine, a spinout of University of Texas Southwestern, uses pH as a biomarker to detect metastatic cancer. Its technology, which visualizes a tumor, could be a gamechanger.
