SBA Chief in Dallas: ‘We Are Becoming the Startup Nation’

Since January 2021, a record 12.2 million new business applications have been filed nationwide—with Texas alone contributing 1.1 million. Speaking at a Dallas event, Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman emphasized ongoing efforts to support Americans in realizing their entrepreneurial dreams.

At the recent Entrepreneur Showcase in Dallas, four emerging startups were spotlighted alongside Biden Cabinet Member Isabella Casillas Guzman, who leads the Small Business Administration, and Mark Madrid, the driving force behind SBA's Office of Entrepreneurial Development. “I feel like I’ve just been to a TED talk with these entrepreneurs' words of wisdom,” Madrid said at the event powered by Dallas College and The DEC Network.

The DEC Network is about to celebrate its 10th anniversary as a nonprofit entrepreneurship ecosystem builder in Dallas-Fort Worth. But instead of just throwing a party, it's launching even more innovation hubs to help entrepreneurs start, build, and grow their businesses—including The DEC's new RedBird Innovation Center. Besides housing The DEC's HQ, it will offer co-working space, provide business incubation, accelerator programs, podcasting rooms, an event space, and more.

Tarsha Hearns, the former director of LiftFund DFW, has been hired by The DEC Network as its senior director of the Southern Dallas ecosystem.
“I really see this role being a face of the small business community in the southern sector, being someone who is going to be a voice, an advocate, and ensure that entrepreneurs get access to the resources that they need,” Hearns told Dallas Innovates.
