From left: Texas Woman’s University student Saira Jamali, Dallas College student Iryna Martsinovich and TWU professor Tina Gumienny participated in a summer STEM workshop at TWU. A new grant will help create even more opportunities for students majoring in STEM disciplines at TWU.
The project started with a successful pilot earlier this year. The new grant will fund one-day experiential STEM learning opportunities for 100 community college students from Dallas College, North Central Texas College, and Tarrant County College, and paid, two-week internships for 10 students.
MassChallenge will assemble human performance and sports tech innovators to redefine the bounds of the human condition in a new six-week, high-intensity program. Target technologies are applications in biotech, defense, healthcare, space, and sports.
Applications for the Dallas-based cohort are open through September 7.
MassChallenge brought together more than 200 startups, investors, and corporates from the U.S. and beyond for a three-day gathering at Dallas' Pegasus Park. The Boston-based nonprofit accelerator, which expanded to North Texas last year, showcased its new hub as a center of innovation and entrepreneurship.
MassChallenge, a nonprofit connector of startups, founders, entrepreneurs, corporations, and communities, kicked off a partnership with Lyda Hill Philanthropies at the MC | Innovate 2023 Conference July 11-13 at Pegasus Park in Dallas....

In a recent centennial state parks commemorative issue of Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine, Lyda Hill offers her take on the power of parks. "Where parks are well-maintained and inviting, the surrounding communities are often also flourishing," she says.
The award recognizes outstanding Bold Idea students who received hands-on learning and mentoring from volunteer industry professionals from top Dallas-area tech companies. The award winners
showed advanced computer science skills, built creative coding projects, and have big goals. See who won—and why one could make the FBI happy.
Lyda Hill Philanthropies and TAMEST, the Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science, and Technology, have launched the Hill Prizes. The new program will provide $2.5 million in funding to support the research of Texas scientists.
A newly established federal agency—Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), a $2.5 billion initiative modeled after the successful DARPA—aims to revolutionize medical research. To secure one of its three national centers, three Texas cities have formed a consortium that's set to propel the Lone Star State to the forefront of effort. If their pursuit is successful, the hub would land in Dallas—and have spokes across the Lone Star State.
The new tenants include Engage Dallas, Housing Forward, PCCI, Teach for America, Texas Women’s Foundation, and The 2.0 Collaborative. The additions bring Water Cooler at Pegasus Park to a full capacity with a total of 32 tenants, ranking it among the largest nonprofit shared space communities in the country.
The campaign builds on the region's thriving tech sector as the foundation of Dallas-Fort Worth's growing biotech and life science ecosystem. “What we’re seeing now is the cumulative effect of convergence across industries—and that gives DFW an edge," says Mike Rosa, the DRC's economic development chief.
The DRC's new VP of Economic Development, Kelly Cloud, is spearheading efforts to attract startups and established life science companies to Dallas-Fort Worth.
The Boone Family Foundation dedicated $2.65 million and Lyda Hill Philanthropies committed $2.5 million to help fund the Five Mile Creek Greenbelt, a network of parks and trails the TPL is developing across Oak Cliff and southwest Dallas.
"For 80 years, Dallas has dreamed of a greenbelt along Five Mile Creek to benefit the city’s health, connectivity, and environment," the TPL's board chair said.
In a ceremony Thursday night in New York City, Hill received a 2022 Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy along with fellow recipients Dolly Parton, Manu Chandaria, and Lynn and Stacy Schusterman.
Dallas Innovates wrote about Hill's honor back in August. She was recognized by the Carnegie Medal for supporting women in STEM fields and inspiring girls to be interested in STEM careers, in addition to being recognized for investments in the life sciences, including cancer and mental health research and treatment; conservation; and empowering community-based nonprofits to maximize impact, the organization said.
Dallas' Lyda Hill has been named one of five recipients of the 2022 Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy. She shares the philanthropic spotlight with four other "forces for positive change," including country music legend Dolly Parton.
An early donor of the research that led to the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, Hill believes that "science is the answer"—and has chosen to donate the entirety of her estate to philanthropy and scientific research.
The multi-floor space for nonprofits, philanthropies, and social impact organizations now has 26 tenants with around 500 employees. The six new ones range from the Nature Conservancy of Texas to the Lone Star Justice Alliance to SWAN Impact Network and more.
“This dream of ours just keeps getting bigger and better,” says Lyda Hill, founder of Lyda Hill Philanthropies.
Through a three-year partnership called the North Texas Funders Initiative, The Dallas Foundation and local leadership impact nonprofit RevJen Group, along with others including Lyda Hill Philanthropies, will bring leadership development training to over 300 nonprofit leaders each year.
On NBC’s TODAY on Friday, the IF/THEN Initiative unveiled a new ad campaign in collaboration with the social impact nonprofit Ad Council that’s set to air on Super Bowl Sunday.
The Dallas-based nonprofit is also taking its 3D-printed statues to the Smithsonian Museum.
