HSC Fort Worth Streamlines College Names, Launches New Graduate School as Central Hub

In September, HSC's new Graduate School will act as the main coordinating hub for research and advanced degree programs, while three HSC schools get rebranded as colleges.

The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth (HSC) is making changes to better define three of its schools and align graduate education with HSC’s research enterprise.

Starting September 1, HSC will introduce a new Graduate School that will serve as a central hub for coordinating research-focused graduate programs. The move comes alongside a rebranding of three existing schools to colleges, better reflecting their roles, according to an HSC announcement.

The new Graduate School, led by Interim Vice Provost Tom Cunningham,, will connect the dots between existing programs. HSC aims to streamline how it handles research-intensive master’s, doctoral, and dual degree programs.

HSC’s growth brings opportunities for new programs and interdisciplinary training, Cunningham says.

“The Graduate School will help us make the most of these opportunities by facilitating collaboration among existing programs and standardizing certain aspects of research-heavy degree programs so we can serve our students better,” he added in a statement.

The new school is designed to be a central point of support, improving the student experience, aligning graduate education with the university’s research goals, and smoothing out administrative processes. Coordination of HSC’s professional degrees will continue within their respective colleges, HSC noted.

Colleges get a name refresh

HSC said it wants to clarify the distinction in definition between colleges, which offer degrees, and schools, which provide administrative support. As part of the changes, three HSC schools are getting a name update to emphasize their academic focus:

  • The School of Health Professions will now be the College of Health Professions.
  • The School of Public Health is becoming the College of Public Health.
  • The School of Biomedical Sciences will be renamed the College of Biomedical and Translational Sciences, highlighting a push to turn research into real-world solutions.

The names of HSC’s other colleges—the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Pharmacy, and College of Nursing—are staying the same.
