Construction industry products maker Hilti has launched Internet of Things-enabled “smart” fasteners with its Tracefast technology at the World of Concrete trade show this week in Las Vegas.
Hilti Corp. is a Liechtenstein-headquartered multinational company that develops, manufactures, and markets products for the construction, building maintenance, energy, and manufacturing industries. Its North American headquarters are in Plano.
The connected fasteners each have a unique identifying code on them to ease the digital documentation of anchors, screws, and bolts installed on a job site.
The back-end tech uses a data matrix code (DMC) and allows construction workers to scan the code with the Hilti Connect App to view installed fastener details. Bringing IoT to job sites helps to provide control and digital access to setting instructions, training, and inspection documents and certifications, according to a release.
“As IoT transforms the construction industry, our product portfolio will continue to expand and shape possibilities for broader applications and services,” Muthu Manohar, senior director of Fastening & Protection at Hilti North America, said in a release.
Manohar noted that Hilti’s Tracefast tech increases job site productivity, provides traceability from design and ordering to installation, and contributes to the increasing trend of inspections on safety-critical applications. The technology contributes to the concept of “smarter” products, he said.
Along with Tracefast, Hilti has been investing in digitizing the construction industry with products such as its asset management system ON!Track, smart tools, and advanced layout tools.
The company’s areas of expertise include powder-actuated fastening, drilling and demolition, diamond coring and cutting, measuring, firestopping, screw fastening, adhesive and mechanical anchoring, strut and hanger systems, solutions for tool crib productivity, as well as worker health and safety.
