Until now, if you wanted to order an almost 9-pound restaurant meal by drone delivery, you’d look up in your back yard to see not one but two drones buzzing toward you. But now Flytrex—an Israel-based drone food delivery service that’s operated in North Texas since 2022—has launched a game-changing new drone that can handle that order all by itself.
Flytrex says its new Sky2 drone can carry up to 8.8 pounds—”the largest carrying capacity of any food delivery drone available today.” With a range of up to four miles and support for remote pickups directly from restaurant locations, orders are “collected faster and arrive hotter,” Flytrex said, arriving in an average of 4 and a half minutes from takeoff to delivery.
The drone’s extended 4-mile delivery radius means it can reach more customers across suburban communities than ever before, Flytrex added.
Flytrex—which was co-founded by the a leader of Israel’s SpaceIL, part of the team behind the 2019 Beresheet moon mission—first launched its drone deliveries in North Texas in 2022 from a Chili’s location in Granbury, The company has since expanded drone food deliveries to Frisco, Little Elm, and Wylie.
Partnering with Little Caesars
Flytrex is partnering with Little Caesars to launch the Sky2 service locally—but for now the delivery area is limited to a Little Caesars location in Wylie, a suburb northeast of Dallas.
Flytrex said its Sky2 drone enables customers to receive two large pizzas and sodas in a single drone delivery—”a first for on-demand food delivery by air.” An order can include two large pizzas plus Little Caesars’ Crazy Puffs, Crazy Bread, and 20-ounce drinks, all delivered together. The Sky2 is the only drone capable of carrying two large 16-inch pizzas alongside a large beverage in a single delivery, Flytrex said.
Co-Founder and CEO Amit Regev said Flytrex is “laser-focused on making on-demand food delivery by drone a reality for everyday families.”
“A big part of advancing this market is making sure people can get the food they actually want, when they want it, he added in a statement. “Until now, drones simply weren’t capable of delivering a full family meal. The Sky2 changes that. This partnership with Little Caesars expands what drone delivery can do and better meets customers’ expectations, which will drive real, lasting adoption of this technology.”
Integrating with Little Caesars’ ordering systems
The Flytrex-Little Caesars partnership is introducing a “first-of-its-kind” direct integration with Little Caesars’ ordering systems, allowing orders placed via the Flytrex app to flow directly into existing point of sale systems.
“Innovation at Little Caesars has always been driven by one thing—making it easier for customers to enjoy our pizza,” Trish Heusel, VP of innovation at Little Caesars, said in a statement. “Partnering with Flytrex to bring full family meals by drone delivery is a major leap forward, and a clear example of how we’re pushing the boundaries of convenience, speed, and accessibility in our category.”
More on the Sky2 octocopter drone
Flytrex’s Sky2 drone is a fully autonomous delivery platform designed to meet the highest safety standards while maintaining the demanding unit economics of the food delivery market, the company said—resulting in “one of the safest and most cost-efficient delivery systems in operation today.”
The drone is configured as an octocopter with eight motors for full in-flight redundancy, a dual-battery architecture, and GNSS with RTK for “centimeter-level navigation accuracy.” The drone’s AI-enabled flight logic continuously monitors and manages flight operations to ensure safe, reliable performance on every delivery, Flytrex said.
A year of firsts for Flytrex
This is just the latest of Flytrex’s breakthroughs in the last 12 months. Last September, the company secured an investment from Uber as part of a strategic partnership to fulfill Uber Eats orders. Last June, it partnered with DoorDash to launch drone delivery in Frisco and Little Elm. Last August, it received FAA approval for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations. And last May, Flytrex collaborated with Google-owned Wing to become the first commercial drone operators in the U.S. to implement automated flight coordination in shared airspace.
