The Whippersnapper, an “uptempo watering hole” off Henderson Avenue in Dallas, is known for its frequent, immersive pop-ups to celebrate pop culture. It’s a big movie fan, too, as evidenced by its recent “Austin Powers” transformation into the Electric Shagadelic Pussycat Swingers Club.
So you know it couldn’t let “Barbie” slip by.
The mega-hit Warner Bros. movie has earned a staggering $780 million worldwide to date, according to Box Office Mojo, turning Klyde Warren Park pink and putting Ken and Barbie atop a pop-culture crest.
Beginning at 10 p.m. Thursday, August 10, The Whippersnapper will be transformed into “a real-life rendition of the iconic DreamHouse, inviting all ‘Barbs’ and Kens to indulge in the ultimate ‘BAR-bie’ extravaganza,” the club has announced.
The immersive pop-up will feature “Barbie-themed food and drinks, entertainment, and decor that celebrate the iconic doll’s legacy.
“With everyone talking about the movie, we whipped up our spin on the beloved theme,” Whippersnapper co-owner Phil Schanbaum said in a statement. “The BAR-bie pop-up will transport patrons to their own dream world. Everyone has their own take on the doll, and we can’t wait to see all the different ‘Barbs’ and Ken that walk through our doors.”
Previous pop-ups offered odes to ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Simpsons’ and more
Schanbaum is the co-founder of This & That Hospitality—which also owns Sfuzzi, Ferris Wheelers, High Fives, Double D’s, and Tiny Victories. He’s helped oversee many pop-ups at The Whip, including other pop-culture odes to “Game of Thrones,” “The Simpsons,” “Breaking Bad,” and more.
The pop-up BAR-bie will splash its pink excess all the way through Saturday, September 30, featuring custom cocktails like “Life in Plastic” and “He’s just Ken” plus a Barbie’s Burger, Teresa’s Tenders, a California Club, and other themed menu items.
