City of Dallas Proclaims ‘FBI Dallas Hate Crimes Awareness Day,’ Unveils Murals

Extending an FBI national media campaign to fight hate crimes, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson proclaimed October 3 as "FBI Dallas Hate Crimes Awareness Day." Wrap ads on DART buses and trains will help spread the word, and newly painted murals in two Dallas communities aim to help, too.
"Through this proclamation, we are acknowledging that hate is real. But so is love," Mayor Johnson said.

The funding from the National Institutes of Health will help UNT HSC at Fort Worth advance its ongoing research on how Alzheimer's disease affects different racial and ethnic groups. Sid O'Bryant, executive director of UNT HSC's Institute for Translational Research, said there's never been a large-scale study like this before.
“This award and project are nothing short of a bio behavioral ‘moonshot’ program," adds Brian Gladue, HSC executive VP for research and innovation.

Eden Green Technology's newest vertical greenhouses in Cleburne will be able to grow 1.8 million pounds of produce annually in just 62,500 square feet of growing space, the company says. The facilities use Eden Green's proprietary microclimate environments, lighting solutions, and hydroponic vine systems.

Kids that have cancer are sometimes seen as victims. But Salood gives them a chance to be heroes, by becoming "ambassadors" who help create and design products—with proceeds helping the families of pediatric cancer patients in need.
"These kids are very aspirational," says co-founder Kenny Freeland. " I think sometimes when the public looks at a kid with an illness, they forget that there's still a kid deep down there who has dreams and wants to do big things."

Local developer and consulting firm Innovan Neighborhoods is leading the roundtable's efforts to increase affordable housing in the region while accelerating the revitalization of underserved communities around Dallas. With initial funding from JPMorgan Chase, "flexible capital" could help boost needed projects.

Slated to be built in Fort Worth's Historic Southside neighborhood, the planned $70 million museum will get the city funding once the balance for the project has been raised. Designed by the New York office of Denmark-based Bjarke Ingels Group, the building will house the museum on its second level, with a business incubator, restaurant, 250-seat amphitheater, and storefronts at ground level.
“Literally and figuratively, it was designed to be a beacon of light in an area that has been dark for a very long time,” says Jarred Howard, principal of the project's developer.

The Dallas Water Commons project, slated to break ground in 2024, will transform an industrial site in Dallas' Cedars neighborhood into something both beautiful and purposeful: a public wetlands park with hike and bike lanes that will cleanse and filter 650 million gallons of run-off stormwater each year. A big bonus: protecting the wetlands habitat and the species that live and breed there.

UT Southwestern Medical Center at RedBird is a new, 150,000-square-foot hospital that instantly becomes a core feature of the redeveloped Redbird Mall. Located in a former Sears store, the new hospital marks the first time UTSW has transformed a former retail space into a regional medical center.
“In RedBird, we recognized an opportunity to expand our footprint in Dallas and to have a vital presence in a community that has traditionally been underserved by the health care industry," said UTSW's Dr. Marc Nivet.
