Thousands have visited the Commemorative Air Force’s Henry B. Tippie National Aviation Education Center (NAEC) at Dallas Executive Airport since its opening late last year. But it's still a relatively well-kept secret to most of the public. The center is stocked with hundreds of vintage flying aircraft, propellers, classrooms, and pilots—some of whom even flew during World War II.

SMU Research Team’s Tiny Sensor May Go to Mars—and Help Spaceships Land Safely
A team led by Volkan Ötügen, director of the SMU MicroSensor Laboratory, has developed a velocity-measuring "optical microresonator" that could help spaceships land safely on Mars and other planets. It's only 2 millimeters long—about the width of two sharp pencil points.

"Every gram of a device makes a huge difference in how much fuel I will have to have on a spacecraft and how many other items I can include as payload on that spacecraft," said Ötügen, whose research is funded by NASA.

Dallas College Is Awarded a $5M Apprenticeship Building America Grant

The grant—part of more than $121 million given by the U.S. Department of Labor to help strengthen and modernize Registered Apprenticeship programs—was the only one awarded in North Texas. The college was also the only higher education institute in Texas to get one of the grants. The grants are intended to help workers find a “reliable path to the middle class," the Labor Department says.

AT&T, SMU Team Up to Turn Data Science Training into Employment Opportunities

Through a new collaboration that combines training with hand-on experience, Dallas-based AT&T aims to create a pipeline for SMU students to become its next employees through the new Data Science Scholars Program. Six early-stage startup founders took part in the multi-month program, offered by TWU's Jane Nelson Institute for Women’s Leadership and local coworking space The Slate.

The founders' offerings range from "clutter-free spaces" organization to a surgical concierge service to a diaper vending machine concept. Applications will be taken this fall for the program's next incubator, which kicks off in January.
