Hong has received the Established Investigator Award from the American Heart Association, receiving $400,000 in research funding support for five years. The award is given to established investigators in rapid growth phases of their careers, whose accomplishments continue to show promise. Hong's promise centers around his research on new "bioactive materials" to mimic the natural state of a body for heart research. That's important because cardiovascular disease remains the world's No.1 killer in the world, claiming nearly 18 million lives per year, UT Arlington says.

Students Get $185K in Funding for Fledgling Businesses at UT Arlington’s MavPitch Competition

UT Arlington Researcher Takes a Page From Ancient Romans to Reinvent Concrete

UT Arlington civil engineering researcher Warda Ashraf is looking to the past to create a concrete-like material for the future—one that could reduce the carbon emissions created by today's construction industry. The ancient Romans used volcanic ash to make structures that still stand today. With $747,000 in DARPA funding, Ashraf's team found a workable substitute—super-heated clay hydrated with lime and seawater—and is preparing to test it in the Corpus Christi Bay area. “We have the recipe. We tested that in the laboratory," Ashraf told Dallas Innovates. "Now, let's put it in the field and see what happens.”

UT Southwestern Is Selected as One of 12 NIH Obesity Research Centers

Over 150 scientists across dozens of departments will be part of the elite National Institutes of Health-funded, university-wide interdisciplinary research center. Dallas' UT Southwestern Medical Center is the only institution in Texas to be selected for the NIH initiative.

UTSW wants to translate scientific discoveries into new therapeutic strategies for the prevention and treatment of obesity, which it describes as a chronic disease affecting more than 40% of the U.S. population, with medical costs nearing $175 billion.

The Last Word: IDP’s Brandon Buschold on Why Workforce Trade Programs Are Vital

IDP aims to employ 40 works in Rockwall when the facility's up and running, with 25 to 30 coming from the local talent pool. Buschold says IDP plans to get involved in local trade programs, hoping to help train the next generation of workers in the manufacturing, engineering, and production fields.   He's not alone. Workforce training and development has been at the top of the list for many in North Texas recently. Dallas College has made it a major part of its agenda for the region, and in July was awarded a $5 million Apprenticeship Building America grant by the U.S. Department of Labor for its apprenticeship programs.
