Representatives from Autism Speaks will be in Fort Worth this week to share the latest research and learn about work UNT Health Science Center is doing to help those with the developmental disorder.
During a free community event Wednesday at UNTHSC, the public can hear from Autism Speaks’ President and CEO Angela Geiger and Chief Science Officer Thomas Frazier about scientific advances making an impact on people with autism and their families, according to the university.
“Our lab works to understand and support people with autism, so that together, we can find ways to capitalize on their strengths and minimize the things that are difficult in their lives,” said Haylie Miller, an assistant professor in UNTHSC’s Department of Physical Therapy, in a release.
“It’s important for everyone’s voice to be heard in these important conversations so that research is guided by what is relevant and meaningful to the autism community.”

Miller leads Autism Spectrum Disorder research in the university’s Human Movement Performance Laboratory, which utilizes motion picture equipment and virtual reality to record and analyze the movement of people for its research projects.
Using visuomotor integration Miller works with autistic individuals ages 7 to 50 to learn “how the visual and motor systems work together to produce functional behaviors,” according to the university’s website.
