Plano-headquartered Tyler Technologies has helped the state of Texas achieve its electronic filing mandate for all criminal and non-criminal case types. All of Texas’ 254 counties are now using eFileTexas, a Tyler Technologies electronic filing solution. 

As of January 1, 2020, all criminal and non-criminal cases in the State of Texas are required to be filed electronically. Through the help of Tyler Technologies’ eFileTexas solution, the state has been able to complete this statewide undertaking, according to a statement.

eFileTexas offers a single solution for all filing traffic by providing improved reporting and metrics to court staff in Texas. For self-represented litigants, eFileTexas can provide self-help navigation for e-filing, by explaining legal jargon and walking users through the process. 

eFileTexas also reduces the costs associated with buying paper and paper storage in courthouses and other facilities, while providing ecological benefits. 

In September 2015, the Texas Office of Court Administration (OCA) and Tyler worked together to implement e-filing statewide for civil cases, which is still the largest e-filing implementation in the U.S., according to a statement. 

Since then, the system has gained over 340,000 registered users and has helped save over 316 million pages of paper. Equatable to 1,580 tons of paper, it’s around the same weight as 158 Boeing 757 aircrafts, according to Tyler Technologies. Now that the system includes criminal cases, these numbers are expected to become even higher. 

“Helping the state of Texas become paperless in its court filings for all case types is an exciting accomplishment,” Terry Derrick, general manager of eSolutions for Tyler, said in a statement. “We’ve had a strong partnership with the Texas OCA for several years and have brought significant efficiencies to its court processes, helping them improve access to justice and enhance their daily operations.”

In addition to e-filing, the state also uses re:SearchTX, which is an online database that provides civil, family, and probate case information securely, according to a statement. This tool is meant to allow efficient access to important case records and documents at any time to attorneys, justice partners, and other constituents. 

This isn’t the first time Tyler has worked with a state government. The software and technology services provider has collaborated with the state of Illinois to implement statewide e-filing, which is Tyler’s second-largest project of this kind behind Texas. Last July, Tyler also signed an $85M 10-year deal with North Carolina’s state judicial system, which gave the state online access to its judicial system and to e-filing capabilities.

Last April, Tyler brought its annual user conference called Tyler Connect back to DFW. Most recently, Tyler announced it had topped $1 billion in annual revenue for the first time ever.
