North Texas’ Grandscape Named World’s ‘Most Innovative Retail and Entertainment Project’ at London’s RLI Awards

The award is presented annually by Retail and Leisure International, the world's only global magazine for the retail and leisure industry. Grandscape was noted for innovative retail and entertainment offerings that range from the 180-foot Grandscape Wheel to new concepts like Puttery and Electric Gamebox, along with crowd-pleasing attractions like Jurassic Park: The Exhibition.

The team is led by UTSW assistant professor Gary Hon, Ph.D., who developed Mosaic-seq, a gene engineering technique that helped lead to the grant award. UTSW will now become a research partner in a new $185M National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiative to build on findings of the Human Genome Project.

Kellie Mumphrey, founder and CEO of Garland-based MilkSpace, was the big winner at the Veteran Women’s Enterprise Center 4BUSINESSRECOVERY pitch Wednesday. To help nursing moms, MilkSpace provides pop-up canopy "lactation spaces" to outdoor public space operators and event organizers. Mumphrey won the $20,000 first prize for her pitch, and the $3,000 Audience Choice Award as well.

Fort Worth-based First Command Financial Services hit the list at No. 19. Dallas-based civil engineering giant Jacobs came in at No. 53. And Plano-based At Home Group followed up at No. 97.

The pandemic kicked off an "entrepreneurial renaissance," LinkedIn News says. Its report looked at the growth of companies founded between the July 2018 to July 2019 (pre-pandemic) and the July 2020 to July 2021 (mid-pandemic) periods. Dallas-Fort Worth showed 40 percent growth overall. Its fastest growing sectors: manufacturing, design, and finance.
