TWU is Hosting a Citizen Science Symposium This Week

Texas Woman’s University and the SENCER Center of Innovation Southwest will host the symposium on Jan. 31. The day is dedicated to exploring the impact plastics have on the environment.

Texas Woman’s University will host the Spring 2020 Symposium for the Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities (SENCER) Center for Innovation Southwest (SCI-SW). This year’s theme will be Civic Science: The Impact on our Communities by Plastics in Our Environment.

The regional event will focus on the global crisis of plastics in our environment, while ushering in multidisciplinary views related to science, environmental, economic, policy, and health impacts of plastic in our water, soil, and air. The symposium will be held as a “zero impact,” or waste-free event.

There will be presentations featuring various topics, including: the power of film in environmental science, the scientific influence on policy decisions, hosting zero-impact events, and the exploration of plastics in the Dallas-Fort Worth freshwater systems. The presenters are leaders in the SENCER network and at Texas Woman’s University.

Kappa Epsilon Mu, TWU’s chemistry student organization, will also show winning submissions from a student video competition, which challenged students from all disciplines to create a short video about plastics.

Event attendees who wish to share successes in civic responsibility are encouraged to bring posters that demonstrate how they encourage civic responsibility through teaching, research, or community service. Last year, it kicked off with the poster session where there were ten posters describing the work within the symposium theme, including one presented by DCCCD faculty.

The Symposium for the Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities will take place from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. in Room 259 of the Ann Stuart Science Complex on TWU’s Denton campus.
