Southlake-based Sabre is shaking up its leadership team. The provider of software and technology to the travel industry is separating the roles of president and chief executive officer, effective Jan. 3, to prepare for the future.

Kurt Ekert, who recently served five years as president and CEO of Carlson Worldwide Travel, has been named president. He will report to Sean Menke, who will continue to serve as CEO.

Ekert will oversee all aspects of business and technology operations, which includes the company’s digital transformation. He will also be responsible for travel and hospitality solutions, technology engineering, and Sabre Labs. In addition to Carlson Worldwide Travel, Ekert has held leadership roles at Travelport Worldwide, Gulliver’s Travel Associates, Orbitz Worldwide, and more.

Menke will remain focused on accelerating the execution of Sabre’s strategic plans to achieve its vision and deliver long-term value to stakeholders.

“We are thrilled to have Kurt join Sabre as president during this pivotal phase in our transformation journey. He brings extensive global operating leadership and a deep understanding of the travel technology ecosystem,” Menke said in a statement. “Kurt’s disciplined and accountable approach coupled with his understanding of what our customers need in an evolving marketplace make him an ideal individual to step into this leadership role.”

Menke has helmed Sabre since December 2016. Previously, he was the travel giant’s executive vice president and the president of its Sabre Travel Network business. Menke replaced Tom Klein, who was CEO beginning in 2013.
