Omni Dallas Hotel
.…on animations by UT Dallas students gracing the hotel at night during Dallas Arts Month.
Andrew Scott’s Projection Mapping Lab students at UT Dallas may have dreamed of one day finding a big canvas for their work. But they probably never thought they’d get a big chunk of the downtown Dallas skyline.
To celebrate Dallas Arts Month, the Omni Dallas Hotel is displaying 16 animations by Scott’s students on select nights through the end of the April, from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. The program is called “Cosmic Trailblazing: Comet Artistry Takes Over Dallas Skyline.”
“It’s a wonderful feeling when you can get the work out of the classroom and into the community,” Scott, an associate professor of arts and technology at UTD, said in a statement. “I like big stages for our students because I think what they do is important [and] very creative, and people need to see it.”
Omni Hotel’s Andrews—who graduated in 2020 with a marketing degree from UTD’s Naveen Jindal School of Management—got the idea for the display from Scott.
“When Professor Scott reached out to us earlier this year, we knew this would be the perfect collaboration to celebrate Dallas Arts Month,” Andrews said in a statement. “These student shows are definitely one-of-a-kind.”
One of the students whose work is lighting up the Omni is senior Ocarina “Rina” Harrison. She’s preparing for an audio-visual technician career by working at various events and concerts, and created her own signature animation for the Omni featuring a wing and a roller skate.
“Before this class, I wasn’t aware of all the stuff that could be done, but projectors are a really interesting medium to play with and can really enhance an event and give it a much grander, larger-than-life kind of feel,” Harrison said. “I’m really excited about having my work at the Omni.”
