When a new sports franchise has its home debut, it usually doesn’t play one of the world’s best teams. But Dallas Trinity FC did just that at the Cotton Bowl Thursday night. North Texas’ first-ever women’s pro soccer club lost 6-0 to Spain’s world-famous FC Barcelona Femini. But as today’s Last Word notes, it was still a big win for Dallas and for women’s sports in the region.
The international “friendly” was Trinity FC’s second-ever official outing, following the team’s 1-1 tie against Tampa Bay Sun FC in Tampa on August 18. Both games were televised on NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service.
“North Texas has been waiting for this, and now is the right time for professional women’s soccer in Dallas—the best sports business city in the country,” Trinity FC President Charlie Neil said in a statement last May.
Trinity FC, named after the river that courses through Dallas, is one of eight clubs in the newly launched USL Super League. Its Pegasus-themed logo pays tribute to the same civic icon adopted by the Dallas Wings, and its main team colors are sunrise maroon, prairie gold, and live oak green.
The city and team seem made for each other. In 1973, the Dallas Sting became the first all-girls soccer club in the U.S., and the 1980-founded Dallas Cup remains one of the most prestigious youth soccer tournaments in the nation. Today, the Dallas region is home to more girls soccer players than anywhere else in the country, according to the U.S. Youth Soccer Association.
“Soccer is the pathway to community for many families,” Neil said in May. “Dallas is the perfect backdrop for our expansion, growth, and community to grow wings.”
