City of Fort Worth Joins North Texas Innovation Alliance

The NTXIA said that Fort Worth's coming on board signifies "a major step" toward the city's continued commitment to enhancing quality of life, safety, public health, and welfare of residents in the region through "a data-driven approach." The Panther City joins more than 40 municipalities, agencies, corporations, and academic institutions already in the alliance.

Dublin-based Manna Drone Delivery is kicking off its U.S. commercial operations from the AllianceTexas Mobility Innovation Zone in Fort Worth. For now, it's delivering food and beverages (and yes, candy) from national and local retailers to only one North Texas neighborhood: Pecan Square by Hillwood Communities in Northlake.

Starting in May, Gatik's autonomous 20-foot box trucks will begin rolling goods from Kroger's Dallas distribution center to Kroger grocery stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Initially, they'll be operated with a safety driver in the cab, Gatik says.

The all-electric, autonomous courier robot was built by Clevon, an Estonia-based company that moved its U.S. HQ to Fort Worth's AllianceTexas Mobility Innovation Zone three months ago. At the HQ opening, Estonia's president said "The future is very near."

Until now, most autonomous delivery pilots have involved 18-wheelers driving on highways between cities. Gatik's new commercial partnership with Georgia-Pacific and KBX involves smaller loads: It's "the first time that Class 6 autonomous box trucks have been deployed" to disrupt the Class 8 semi-truck short-haul network, the startup said.
