Medicine Delivered in Plant Seeds? UNT Researchers Get $1.4M Grant for a First-of-Its-Kind Study

The University of North Texas BioDiscovery Institute's $1.4 million grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation is seeding research in sustainable medicine—literally.

“What we're thinking long-term is that if plants can store medicines in seeds, you eat the seeds, and the medicine is already contained. You don't have all these factories, you don't need any chemicals—it's just there and available,” said UNT lead researcher Elizabeth Skellam.

The Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company is building an $11M, 22,000SF drug manufacturing plant in Dallas' Deep Ellum, aiming to "disrupt and disable big pharma." The startup plans to launch an online pharmacy selling 100 of the most commonly prescribed generic prescription drugs at a 15 percent markup plus a $3 dispensing fee.

"Our only goal is to push down the pricing of drugs for every American," the company pledges.

In addition, Nanoscope has named Al Guillem as Chairman of the Board. Guillem (pictured below) was part of TechFW's greatest success story when ZS Pharma, a company he co-founded, was purchased by AstraZeneca for $2.7 billion.
