Irving-Based 7-Eleven and Green Day Launch a Blend of Band’s ‘Punk Bunny Coffee’ to Mark Mutual Anniversaries

Thirty years after Green Day's breakout album "Dookie"—and 60 years after 7-Eleven started selling freshly brewed coffee in to-go cups—an unlikely brand collaboration has come to pass. And it includes 711 days of free 7-Eleven coffee if you get a tattoo at this one store in NYC.

When punk bands get old, it’s not always pretty. But the guys in Green Day are still having the time of their lives—and they’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of their breakout album with a corporate convenience behemoth that’s marking one of its own.

On August 28, Irving-based 7-Eleven will launch an exclusive “Anniversary Blend” of Green Day’s coffee brand—Punk Bunny Coffee—at 7-Eleven, Speedway, and Stripes stores nationwide.

The brand collab celebrates the 60th anniversary of 7-Eleven’s first sales of freshly brewed coffee in to-go cups and the 30th anniversary of Green Day’s 1994 breakout album “Dookie,” which sold over 10 million copies in the U.S. and 20 million worldwide.

“When we first came together as a band back in high school, the 7-Eleven in our hometown was our go-to spot,” Billie Joe Armstrong, Green Day’s frontman, said in a statement. “As we celebrate the anniversaries of two of our biggest albums, it’s a full-circle moment to have our coffee company Punk Bunny available at 7-Eleven stores.”

Custom 7-Eleven x Punk Bunny tattoos

The punk trio is known for being heavily tattooed, with fans who ink band tributes on their own skin. So the innovative marketing team at 7-Eleven came up with a play on that.

On August 28 starting at 8:00 a.m. ET, the first 50 fans who show up at the 7-Eleven at 800 6th Avenue in New York City and get inked with a custom 7-Eleven x Punk Bunny tattoo will receive free 7-Eleven coffee for 711 days, the company said. The semi-permanent tattoo is the work of Lady Cobra, a fellow Bay Area native. She’ll be on-site at the event inking some fans herself, 7-11 added.

“This year, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of 7-Eleven as the first national retailer to offer freshly brewed coffee in to-go cups, making us the OG To-Go coffee destination,” Dennis Phelps, SVP of Merchandising (Vault & Proprietary Beverages) at 7-Eleven, said in a statement. “What better way to celebrate than by teaming up with Punk Bunny to bring new and exclusive coffee options to our customers and offering a one-of-a-kind coffee experience?”

So what’s Punk Bunny Coffee? It’s a blend featuring hints of citrus along with undertones of “rich stone fruit.” The warm cocoa with a gentle hint of spice finish creates a multi-layered coffee experience, 7-Eleven said—adding that in addition to the exclusive Anniversary Blend roast, Punk Bunny is bringing Fair Trade Certified coffee to 7-Eleven with bagged blends and K-Cups of the Sound Check and Last Ride In roasts, available in stores.

Fans across the U.S. can also snag a limited-edition Punk Bunny-inspired collectible refill mug in 7-Eleven and Speedway stores while supplies last.

Tees, hats, and swag, too

Punk Bunny Coffee tees, hats, and swag are available now at 7-Eleven’s online merch shop, as well.

“As a Green Day fan myself, Imm particularly excited to share this collaboration with our customers,” said Marissa Jarratt, EVP & Chief Marketing and Sustainability Officer at 7-Eleven. “The addition of Punk Bunny to the 7-Eleven coffee lineup continues our commitment to bring new, exclusive items to stores. Together with Punk Bunny, we hope to excite coffee and music fans everywhere and celebrate 60 years of our to-go coffee.”
