Center for Women Entrepreneurs seeking Texas Veteran Women to Apply for Grant Program

Grants support women veterans in Texas who own their own businesses or are interested in launching one. The center said that 25 grants of $5,000, for a total of $125,000 in grant funds, will be awarded to qualified Texas women veterans who are starting or who have existing businesses.

The Center for Women Entrepreneurs at Texas Woman’s University in Denton will be accepting submissions for its Veteran Woman Entrepreneur Grant program starting March 31.

The grant program supports women veterans in Texas who own their own businesses or are interested in launching one.

“Women veteran entrepreneurs typically generate lower profits than their non-veteran, businesswomen counterparts. Last year, our grant recipients were able to purchase inventory, machinery, and technology to increase revenue, and prospective entrepreneurs received a boost to get their business launched,” Center Director Tracy Irby said in a statement.

The center said that 25 grants of $5,000, for a total of $125,000 in grant funds, will be awarded to qualified Texas women veterans who are starting or who have existing businesses.

This is the second year the Center for Women Entrepreneurs is offering this grant program aimed specifically at helping women veteran entrepreneurs throughout Texas. Navy veteran Kelli Mumphrey received one of the grants last year for her social impact business MilkSpace, which offers a mobile breastfeeding space for nursing moms at big events.

A completed online application must be submitted before 5 p.m., May 5, the center said. Winners will be announced on May 22.

According to the center, grant funding may be used to buy machinery, equipment or technology; acquire new inventory or raw materials; purchase and installation of fixtures or display units; property improvements; marketing; or other business-related activity that is aligned with the purpose of the program.

Grants cannot be used for wages, salaries, and sales tax, the center said.

Awardees must meet with the center’s small business adviser and veteran mentors, as well as complete a virtual training series hosted by the center, to receive the funding.

The course will cover topics related to business plan development, insurance, marketing, legal matters, accounting, and finance.
