A new patent assigned to Toyota shows an autonomous driving system that transmit optical power beams to aerial vehicles that convert optical power to electrical power. Figure 4 of Toyota’s patent No. 10579069 shows an autonomous vehicle about to enter into an obstacle area where it can’t transmit an optical power beam to the aerial vehicle. The patent describes how the autonomous vehicle can send a message to the aerial vehicle, indicating it's entering an obstacle area. [DI composite image.
