The nation’s largest retailer of used vehicles announced new plans today to bolster its North Texas presence with aggressive expansion plans in the region.
Richmond, Virginia-based CarMax is supporting its company-wide growth, digital innovation, and enhanced customer experience via three new local openings: a technology innovation center, auction facility, and remote customer experience center. Supporting that will be more than 300 positions CarMax is hiring for in the Dallas area.
Shamim Mohammad, CarMax’s executive vice president and chief information and technology officer, said the company is specifically looking for innovators “who can help redefine what the future of car buying looks like.” The team wants people who can support CarMax’s mission—offering a car buying and selling experience where the customer is at the center of every step.
“Dallas has built itself up to become a ripe tech and digital environment, and we’re excited to tap into the regional talent and beyond who can help us continue innovating at an accelerated pace,” Mohammad said in a statement. “We look forward to becoming part of the Dallas tech community.”
Technology innovation center
The center—dedicated to supporting the core of CarMax’s customer experience, digital innovation—is set to open mid-September.
Located at Granite Park in Plano, the new technology innovation center will task its teams with advancing tech solutions that make the car buying process easier through machine learning, data science, and software development.
CarMax plans to hire more than 200 hybrid or fully remote workers, who will be based in the Plano tech hub or the company’s Virginia headquarters. Those positions will include software engineers, architects, technology managers, and technology analysts.
Auction facility
The 11-acre auction facility, located in Hutchins, is what CarMax calls an “important expansion” of its wholesale business. It will be the dedicated site for providing auction customers the ability to source the vehicles at a single location North Texas.
CarMax plans to relocate all services to the new facility. There, it will centralize area store auctions and provide storage for up to 3,000 vehicles, the company said.
Twenty-five associates will be hired in a variety of roles, including business office, auction services, and managers. CarMax expects the virtual auction hub to open by October.
Remote customer experience center
CarMax is also hiring more than 75 remote positions in the Dallas market to support customers who choose to do the car buying process primarily from home.
Its customer experience center associate base will assist customers over the phone online with shopping and financing until the vehicle is ready to be picked up at an area location or be delivered.
CarMax has more than 220 stores across its footprint. It aims to offer a personalized experience for customers, allowing them to do as much or as little online or in-store as they want. According to the company, it sold more than 750,000 used vehicles and more than 425,000 wholesale vehicles during the fiscal year ending February 28, 2021.
