In any large metropolitan area like Dallas, traffic management is a chief concern for city officials. Seattle-based INRIX has reported that, in 2013, traffic congestion cost Americans $124 billion in direct and indirect losses, and this number will rise to $186 billion in 2030. It is clear that managing traffic flows effectively and efficiently is no easy feat, especially when we continue to see population growth, GDP growth, a decline in fuel prices, and an increase in car ownership in large cities.
Verizon Wireless offers a traffic control system that helps cities tackle the traffic challenge. The solution, part of Verizon’s Smart Cities technologies, includes network capacity for wireless routers at traffic intersections throughout a given city, all powered by Verizon’s high-speed 4G LTE network. The routers support a number of key traffic control functions, including traffic timing, remote monitoring for the traffic controllers, and, at some intersections, video on demand capabilities for traffic cameras.
In addition to the traffic control solution, Verizon also provides network connectivity and video streaming to surveillance cameras in order for law enforcement officials to monitor a city’s geographic hot spots, where conditions are favorable for crime to occur. Video monitoring systems can be deployed at traffic intersections in these hot spots to help mitigate crime.
Beyond traffic control, Verizon offers a host of solutions aimed at creating smart, efficient cities.
However, the technology solutions will not be possible without the strength and reliability of the Verizon 4G LTE network. It is the network that ensures 24-hour video streaming for all surveillance cameras, which allows the city’s police department to gain situational awareness of the hot spots at all times. Nearly all of Verizon’s towers have backup generators to keep them working even when unexpected events, such as severe weather, which causes blackouts.
According to a study titled “Enterprise and IP Storage Used for Video Surveillance” from IHS, surveillance cameras generate 413 petabytes of data each day—enough to fill 92 million single-sided, single-layer DVDs. It is imperative to rely on a large, robust wireless network to transport this explosive deluge of data so that they can be analyzed properly and timely.
Beyond traffic control, Verizon offers a host of solutions aimed at creating smart, efficient cities. Equipped with accurate and near real-time information and analytics, municipalities using Verizon’s Smart Cities technologies are able to develop strategies to improve their infrastructure, plan for long-term growth, create more energy-efficient environments, and keep people safe.
