When Leah Cooper decided to pursue a nursing career, she had no idea it would lead her down the path of entrepreneurship, involving both siblings, and a future partnership with mobile development company, Five Pack Creative.
Cooper’s experience as a charge nurse demonstrated to her the challenges associated with keeping a health care facility staffed.
During a staffing shortage, Cooper would call several traditional agencies to request a nurse. This led to hours on the phone waiting for agencies to call their list of nurses, with no guarantee of fulfillment. Additionally, the large fees charged by agencies made bringing on support cost-prohibitive. The result was often a shift that was understaffed, causing the nurses on the floor to take on a higher patient load and work overtime.
She found that staffing shortages were reducing the quality of care provided to patients and increasing stress on the caregivers. Plus, nurses were experiencing burnout and leaving the field in alarmingly high numbers.
CUTTING OUT THE ‘MIDDLE-MAN’ IN HEALTH CARE STAFFING
Cooper soon realized the nurse staffing industry was in the same situation as the travel industry before online booking websites were developed. Prior to sites such as Expedia and Travelocity, consumers relied on outdated technology and a “middle-man” to book travel.
In health care, staffing recruiters were serving as a go between the health care facilities and providers. And, their reliance on phone calls, texts messages, and emails resulted in wasted time, poor customer service, and high costs. She knew there had to be a better way.
The result is a transparent marketplace that simplifies and expedites the whole process.
That’s when Cooper started out on her journey to develop app technology that could connect available, pre-credentialed nurses directly to the health care facilities who needed their services. Her search for an app developer who could bring this idea to life led her to a strategic partnership with Five Pack Creative and, with that, Fort Worth-based Sadiant Health was born.
Today, Sadiant is not only a full-service staffing agency, but also a technology company that uses a mobile app and web portal to directly connect health care facilities to its pool of prequalified and available health care professionals.
Health care facilities can create job requisitions in minutes and see the profiles of care providers who meet their needs and are available to pick up their shifts. The facilities can then send shift requests directly to Sadiant employees via the app. Sadiant employees have the ability to accept or decline the shift request. The result is a transparent marketplace that simplifies and expedites the whole process.

Additionally, the utilization of technology allows Sadiant to reduce the high costs associated with recruiters and schedulers. The cost savings are then passed on to both customers and employees so health care facilities pay less while care providers earn more.
Sadiant and FPC have been testing the technology in a large North Texas health system for several months with very positive feedback.
Sadiant began marketing its services earlier this year to local hospitals, surgery centers, long-term care facilities, and clinics all seeking to improve patient care, lower costs, and resolve nursing shortages across North Texas.
