The Last Word: AT&T on the Famous First Words That Launched an Industry 150 Years Ago

The company is celebrating with a free pop-up museum at the AT&T Discovery District in downtown Dallas — and a $250 billion bet on what comes next.

“Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you.”

Alexander Graham Bell

Bell Telephone Company
… the first words ever transmitted by telephone, on March 10, 1876.

The call that launched an industry, and eventually AT&T, hit its 150th anniversary this week.

To mark it, AT&T opened a free “150 Years of Innovation” pop-up museum at the AT&T Discovery District in downtown Dallas, running March 10–12. The exhibit features historic artifacts, including Bell’s original telephone patent.

The company also donated $150,000 to The Alexander and Mabel Bell Legacy Foundation, which preserves Bell’s legacy through educational programs. And it announced plans to spend $250 billion over the next five years on U.S. connectivity.

“The first phone call sparked an entirely new way for people and businesses to deepen connections and thrive,” AT&T Chairman and CEO John Stankey said. “Today, we carry the spirit of communication forward in bold new ways, powering connections for a new generation.”
