The Last Word: Why the New York Times Put Irving’s Simply South on its 2024 America’s Best Restaurants List

“All [of the dosas] come with six different chutneys and a sinus-awakening sambar that you’ll want to guzzle from a mug.”

The New York Times
.…on one reason it named Irving’s Simply South Indian restaurant to its 2024 list of America’s Best Restaurants.

The New York Times is out with its 2024 list of America’s Best Restaurants, and a spicy destination off I-635 in Irving has made its colorful way onto the list. Simply South opened only last December in a former Tex-Mex restaurant location at 1001 MacArthur Park Drive—but the word is definitely out. The Times says the wait is 3 hours on Sundays for dishes from Andhra Pradesh in southern India “that tastes like home cooking from the chefs Venkatesawara Rao Muttavarapu, Manikandan Ramalingam, and Anoop Muraleedharan.”

Simply South was the only North Texas restaurant to make the Times’ list of 50 U.S. restaurants for 2024. (The other two Texas restaurants on the list are Lockhart’s Barbs B Q and Seabrook’s Viola and Agnes’ Neo Soul Cafe)

More Simply South restaurants are on the way soon—according to its website, a location in Frisco will open in Q1 2025. And a location in Illinois is slated for Q4 2024.
