Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is getting a new extension for its Terminal D—one that gives the international terminal an even greater feeling of spaciousness and runway vistas while delivering energy-saving technology through the use of View Dynamic Glass.
Designed by luis vidal + architects in association with HarrisonKornberg Architects and Arup, the new extension design features four new boarding gates and a 150,700-square-foot concourse connecting the original Terminal D with its new extension.
The new gate area designs house “modern waiting areas and lounges, an international corridor for federal inspections and customs for international passengers, and an extension to the baggage claim area,” luis vidal + architects noted in a statement.
Featuring floor-to-ceiling walls of high-tech View Dynamic Glass
Aiming to offer passengers “a feeling of space and comfort,” the design features large glass facades that overlook the airport runways—but that glass has high technology within its expansive view. The View Dynamic Glass automatically adjusts to sunlight, optimizing access to natural light and views while improving the comfort of nearby passengers. The dynamic windows will reduce energy consumption in the new terminal extension by 15%, luis vidal says.
The same View Dynamic Glass is being installed throughout the entire DFW Airport, airport officials have noted.
Airline travel—especially for international flights, which are concentrated in DFW’s Terminal D—can be stressful at times. So the new extension aims to keep passengers soothed and calmed by their surroundings, which feature elements of wood, ceramic, and terrazzo in tones of just-relax neutral.
