Amazon Has Invested $15B in North Texas—And a Total of $29B Across the State—since 2010

On Wednesday, Amazon announced findings from its 2021 U.S. Economic Impact Report, sharing a by-the-numbers look at its U.S. investments.

With its recently opened fulfillment center in Forney, Amazon now has more than 30 operations facilities across Dallas-Fort Worth—making North Texas its biggest market in the state. The company now has 37,000 direct employees in DFW alone.

That package waiting on your doorstep? It’s just the tip of the iceberg. Amazon announced today that it has invested more than $15 billion in North Texas—and $29 billion total across the Lone Star State—since 2010.

Amazon recently opened a new fulfillment center in Forney, just east of Dallas, along with several other delivery stations across Dallas-Fort Worth. The company now has more than 30 operations facilities in North Texas—from fulfillment centers to sortation centers to delivery stations.

Report: $530B invested across the U.S.

All those numbers are in Amazon’s 2021 U.S. Economic Impact Report, produced by economists at Keystone Strategy. A few more highlights: the company has invested a total of $530 billion across the U.S. since 2010. It’s paid more than $160 billion to its U.S. workforce, and has led the fight for a $15 minimum wage, offering at least that starting wage to all its hourly employees.

DFW operations growth drives local jobs

All those new operations mean lots jobs, and Amazon’s been adding them fast. It now has 37,000 direct employees in Dallas-Fort Worth alone, and says it has helped create over 60,000 indirect jobs in the area through construction, transportation, retail, healthcare, food services, and more.

“We’re a global business with local roots set firmly in communities like Dallas and Fort Worth,” said Vickie Yakunin, senior manager, external affairs at Amazon. “From the local jobs we bring, to the local people we employ, train, and upskill—our business is made up of people from the neighborhoods in which we operate.”

“We’re incredibly proud to support a diverse and growing workforce in North Texas,” Yakunin added. “In 2020 alone, Amazon created over 30,000 new employment opportunities for Texans—and we’re excited to continue to build on that momentum.”

Texas sees big benefits from Amazon’s growth

Amazon says it has created more than 70,000 jobs in Texas in operations, logistics, corporate, and technology arenas since 2010. The report estimates that the company’s investments in the state led to the contribution of more than $34 billion to the Texas economy over the last decade,

In addition to Amazon’s direct employment, it says its investments have supported the creation of more than 136,000 indirect jobs across the state.

“It’s been incredible to watch Amazon continue to expand and hire across the state of Texas over the last several years,” said Bri Tye, regional director of operations at Amazon.

Tye started with Amazon more than eight years ago as a seasonal hourly employee and now serves as regional director of operations overseeing five fulfillment centers in Texas.

“I can say from first-hand experience, the sky is the limit at Amazon and I look forward to seeing our continued growth throughout the state of Texas for years to come,” she says.

Governor Abbott: Amazon helps Texas businesses

Governor Greg Abbott believes Amazon’s growth here is a testament to the state’s resiliency—and has paid off in the growth of Texas-bred businesses.

“The Texas economy has proved its resiliency as we continue to see remarkable job growth with the support of employers like Amazon,” Gov. Abbott said in a statement. “Over the last 10 years, Amazon’s $29 billion economic investment in communities across our state has not only created tens of thousands of quality jobs for Texans, but it’s also given a platform to many of our small and medium-sized businesses to grow their companies.”

Pro-social efforts in Texas

Amazon’s impact on Texas extends beyond jobs and investment. Its pro-social efforts include Amazon Future Engineer, the company’s global childhood-to-career program for students from underrepresented and underserved communities, supports more than 350 Texas schools. The program’s goal is getting kids interested in computer science. Amazon has also partnered with local food banks to volunteer, package, or deliver more than 500,000 meals to North Texans in need.
