The University of Texas at Arlington’s commitment to sustainable, environmental research and social impact has placed it in the top quarter of global institutions according to a recent ranking.
UTA said it ranks in the top 23% globally and is ranked 77th among 239 U.S. institutions.
“At UTA, we remain steadfast in our commitment to sustainability, even as the landscape evolves, “UTA Chief Sustainability Officer Meghna Tare said in a statement. “This recognition highlights our dedication to advancing environmental research and promoting health and well-being. Our strong performance reflects the collective efforts of our students, faculty and staff to create a more sustainable and equitable world.”
UTA said that this is the third year that QS, a company that provides higher education analytics and services, has published sustainability rankings assessing institutions worldwide based on their contributions to environmental sustainability, social responsibility and good governance.
Sustainable leadership
The university said its spot on the rankings showcases UTA’s leadership in sustainability.
Earlier this year, UTA said it launched its Climate Action Plan to address climate change and sustainability. The plan will examine UTA’s Campus 2040 goals for deep decarbonization – a long-term strategy to reduce carbon emissions by replacing fossil fuels with sustainable alternatives – and aims to explore how individual actions, policies, infrastructure, and finances can support the transition to a more sustainable future.
UTA said its Office of Sustainability has launched initiatives focused on resource conservation, education and outreach, transportation and reducing food waste. It said those efforts seek to minimize the university’s environmental impact and promote sustainable practices.
UTA said it offers a range of degree programs and certificates in sustainability, including a Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Urban Design, as well as minors in Environmental and Sustainability Studies and Sustainable Engineering.
UT Arlington is a comprehensive teaching, research, and public service institution dedicated to the advancement of knowledge through scholarship and creative work.
Its enrollment is roughly 41,000 students, and UT Arlington is the second-largest institution in the UT System.
Its combination of academics and innovative research contributes to the university’s designation as a Carnegie R-1 “Very High Research Activity” institution, a significant milestone of excellence. UTA is designated as a Hispanic Serving-Institution and an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education and has earned the Seal of Excelencia for its commitment to accelerating Latino student success.
