They say you gotta be a New Yorker to really know bagels—which may be just one reason for Shugrue’s successful 2020 launch of Shug’s Bagels at 3020 Mockingbird Lane in Park Cities Plaza near SMU

The native New York Stater and SMU grad raised $300,000 from friends and family to get his first location launched, and found success during the pandemic when other restaurants in town were folding, D CEO writes.

“It was a blessing in disguise,” he told D CEO’s WIll Maddox. “The food writers had nothing to write about, and we were a positive story in a sea of dead restaurants.”

After opening his second Dallas location at 4001 Lemmon Avenue, he’s now exploring “several DFW neighborhoods” to roll out additional bagel bastions.
