The Last Word: On Unprecedented Pressures Testing Nonprofits — and the Call for Reinforcements

“This moment is testing them in ways even the pandemic didn’t.”

After more than seven years supporting nonprofits across the spectrum—from local changemakers to national institutions—Harold Hogue says what he’s witnessing now is unlike anything before.

In a LinkedIn post today, the CoSpero Consulting managing partner described what nonprofit leaders are facing: one client had to leave a meeting when the National Guard arrived at her food bank to help move food “like it’s a natural disaster” amid delays in SNAP benefits. Another is adding ICE protocols to public meeting agendas. A third scrapped a long-term plan to reorient around urgent needs triggered by federal funding shifts.

“These are not isolated events. This isn’t media spin. This is real,” Hogue wrote. “And the weight on nonprofit leaders is heavier than it’s ever been.”

His call to action is straightforward. If you want to respond meaningfully, start local: volunteer an hour, donate what you can, or amplify a nonprofit’s work.

“They’re standing in the gap in ways most folks don’t see,” Hogue said. “And they need more than encouragement right now—they need reinforcements.”

Hogue also highlighted organizations “standing on the front lines” that could use immediate support, from the North Texas Food Bank, Harmony CDC, and Empowering the Masses to national groups like Feeding America and Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

“Don’t let discouragement delay your activism,” he wrote.
